What Is ROAS?

A plain-English definition, real-world examples, and everything you need to know.

Definition

ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) is a marketing metric that measures the revenue generated for every dollar spent on advertising. It is calculated by dividing total revenue from ads by total ad spend. A ROAS of 3x means every $1 spent returns $3 in revenue.

ROAS Explained

ROAS is the number that tells you whether your ads are printing money or burning it. It is the single most important metric for anyone running paid advertising, and the one number every media buyer checks before their morning coffee.

The formula is dead simple: Revenue from Ads divided by Ad Spend. You spent $1,000 on Meta ads and generated $4,000 in revenue? Your ROAS is 4x. But simple math does not mean simple decisions.

Here is where most people get confused — a "good" ROAS depends entirely on your margins. If you sell a $100 product with $30 COGS, $10 shipping, and $10 in overhead, your breakeven ROAS is 2x. Anything above that is profit. But if your margins are thin (like 20%), you might need a 5x ROAS just to break even.

ROAS also varies wildly by platform, industry, and funnel stage. Prospecting campaigns (cold traffic) typically have lower ROAS than retargeting campaigns. That is normal and expected. A 1.5x ROAS on prospecting that feeds a 10x retargeting campaign is a healthy system.

The trap most advertisers fall into is optimizing purely for ROAS without considering scale. A campaign doing 8x ROAS on $50/day spend is nice — but a campaign doing 3x ROAS on $5,000/day is building an empire. Sometimes you need to accept lower ROAS to scale.

Real-World Examples

1

An ecommerce store spends $2,000 on Facebook ads and generates $8,000 in sales, achieving a 4x ROAS

2

A DTC brand targets 3x blended ROAS across all channels because their product margins are 65%

3

A media buyer scales a campaign from $500/day to $2,000/day while maintaining 2.5x ROAS on cold traffic

4

An agency reports 6x ROAS on retargeting but 1.8x on prospecting, with a blended 3.2x across the full funnel
